Maharani Jindah

The legacy of Sikh Raj and its downfall.

Maharani Jind Kaur , popularly known as Maharani Jindan, was born in Gujranwala (now in Pakistan) in 1817. She was the wife of Maharaja Ranjit Singh (the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire) and the mother of the last Maharaja, Duleep Singh. She was very beautiful, energetic, strong, and confident with an iron will.

Duleep Singh came to power in September 1843 at the age of 5 and Jind Kaur became Regent on her son’s behalf. The British took her son, Maharaja Duleep Singh to England by force and they imprisoned Maharani Jindan. She was permitted to see her son after about thirteen years in 1961 in Calcutta. She was taken to England, where she died on 1 August 1863 at the age of 46.

This is a story of a fight of women against British tyranny and treachery of some of the local powerful leaders who became disloyal after the death of her husband.
