The Pittsburg Police Department works hard to assist the unhoused persons in our community. We also understand that we cannot resolve the issue of homelessness alone and welcome the support of outside agencies and community groups.  Out department Outreach Team consists of a Sergeant and one officer dedicated to working with our unhoused population and community. 

Our team works alongside a two-person team from the Contra Costa County Coordinated Outreach Referral, Engagement (C.O.R.E.) program, who are directly assigned to the community of Pittsburg. C.O.R.E. teams serve as an entry point into Contra Costa’s coordinated entry system for unsheltered persons and work to locate, engage, stabilize and house chronically unhoused individuals and families. The outreach teams identify individuals living on the streets, assess their housing and service needs, and facilitate connection to shelter and services.

We additionally assign one officer to work full-time with a mental health clinician from the Contra Costa County Mental Health Evaluation Team (M.H.E.T.). Together, they work with people throughout East Contra Costa County in need of mental health treatment. Knowing that many people in the unhoused community suffer from mental illness, our M.H.E.T. team coordinates with our Outreach Team to address homeless issues in our community and identify those unhoused with mental illness to provide further assistance.
